Structural fasteners, or high-strength fasteners, are an essential component in the construction of steel structures. High-strength structural fasteners can withstand heavy loads and resist high vibrations.
These anchors are designed to withstand the vibration generated by extreme conditions and overstressing, making them perfect for installation in steel structures, construction anchors, flange connections, electrical towers, bridges and industrial buildings.
One particular type of bolt used for these connections is the high-strength hexagonal bolt. The use of high-strength structural bolts ensures the safety and durability of the structures built. Ensuring the use of the right fasteners is crucial to guarantee the stability and safety of any construction project.
When to use EN 14399-4 and EN 15048 fastening sets
The fastener sets under the European standards EN 15048 and EN 14399-4 include the characteristics of fasteners for joining metal structures.
The set according to EN 14399-4 is made of HV system, quality 10.9, class K1 and includes bolt, nut and washer. Class K 1 is the ability of the fastener sets to be tightened by means of the torque control method or combined method by means of the k-factor. It is a preload set intended for use in high-strength structural connections. Its optimum application is for metallic structures where tensile strength is the prime consideration.
The EN 14399-4 structural kit is available in zinc-plated, black-plated and hot-dip galvanised finishes, and with oversized dimensions (from metric 12 to 36) compared to standard fasteners.
The EN 15048 compliant set is made in quality 8.8, includes bolt and nut, and is available in zinc plated and hot dip galvanised finish. This kit is intended for structural connections without preload. It differs from the EN 14399-4 set in that the tightening does not need to be carried out in a controlled manner, as a manual and uniform tightening, known as snug tight, is sufficient. Furthermore, its application is for shear tensioned structures.
The packaging of both kits includes CE marking and is made in a single box containing nut and bolt for EN 15048; and nut, washer and bolt for EN 14399-4. The elements in each package come from a single batch to guarantee the traceability of the kit.
CE marking for structural steelwork
The structural fastener sets available at Chavesbao have the CE marking in accordance with the construction products regulation.
The CE marking is a process in which the manufacturer or distributor informs users and competent authorities of the compliance with the compulsory legislation in the commercialisation of a product. It is important to note that CE marking does not mean that the product originates from the European Union.
It is mandatory in harmonised standards such as ISO and EN and serves to prove that the application of the products complies with the basic requirements for construction works of current European legislation.
The CE marking of the EN 14399-4 and EN 15048 standards certifies the correct manufacture and compliance with the safety requirements in the sets of construction products. In this way, at Chavesbao, we include the CE mark on the product packaging, which certifies compliance with the European Union’s safety regulations and standards.
